Summer Cups: How to make the perfect serve for Wimbledon

As Wimbledon throws its ball in the air, ready to strike with a rally of fixtures over the next two weeks, I have some summer cup suggestions and tortured tennis analogies for you.

The Summer Cup A.K.A. The Fruit Cup A.K.A. It Looks Like A Pimms, Is It A Pimms? is famously the tipple of choice during the Wimbledon tournament, but it’s a drink that gets as much love as a tennis player who doesn’t score a single point in a match. Which is a lot, but only during the actual tournament. Y’see? I told you these would be torturous.

The thing is, fruit cups are very easy to make, refreshing as hell and there are hundreds of variations. Generally, they are gin-based long cocktails, with a liqueur or two added in and topped up with a fizzy soft drink, with herbs and/or fruit thrown in for garnish.

For a basic formula, fellow Drinkstagrammer The Amateur Mixologist, has started the hashtagathon #sippingwimbledon for those to share their creations on Instagram, and he has offered the following guide:

30ml base spirit
30ml vermouth
30ml liqueur
120ml something with bubbles
Fruit and veg to garnish
My own recipes below don’t necessarily follow this formula, but they might give some inspiration around playing with certain flavours.

Strawberries And Cream Cup

1oz Poetic License Distillery Strawberries And Cream ‘Picnic’ Gin
1oz Triple Sec
1oz Amber Vermouth
2 dashes Summer Berries Bitters
2oz Cream Soda
2oz Ginger Ale
Strawberries, diced
Mint Leaves

Method: Stir the first four ingredients with ice, pour into a glass (or a fin bottle), add more ice along with everything else and stir again.

Summer Fruit Cup

50ml Gin
40ml Slider Liqueur
10ml Elderflower Cordial
125ml Ginger Beer
125ml Cola

Method: Stir the first three ingredients with ice, then add the ginger beer and cola and stir again. Pour into a glass with more ice and garnish with dehydrated fruit.

Cucumber And Elderflower Cup

1oz Cucumber-infused Gin
1oz Elderflower Liqueur
1oz Velvet Falernum
3 dashes Cucumber And Lavender Bitters
Elderflower Tonic

Method: Stir the first four ingredients with ice, then top up with the tonic. Garnish with cucumber.

Blackberry And Mint Cup

6 Blackberries
12 Mint Leaves
½ Lime, cut into quarters
1oz Gin
1oz Spiced Curacao
1oz Sweet Vermouth
2 dashes BitterTruth Old Aromatic Bitters
Ginger Ale

Method: Muddle the blackberries and mint leaves with the lime quarters. Then add the other ingredients and stir with ice before topping up with ginger ale. Garnish with more of all of the above.
There you go. Go forth and Summer Cup, and take picture and don't forget to add #sippingwimbledon.
