Old Fashioned Week 2018: Get some ideas and inspiration

It’s Old Fashioned Week again, which means between 1st and 10th November we all have to dress up in brown corduroy, chase a hoop down a hill with a stick, and drink lots of Old Fashioneds. Although, last year someone told me I should have only bothered with the last part, so you may want to check that.

In any case, that’s ten whole days’ worth of Old Fashioneds to drink. How will you make them? What will you use? Orange peel or maraschino cherry or both? Angostura bitters or orange bitters or both? It’s a bloody minefield.

Here are a few that I have made, in case these recipes help.

Gingerbread Old Fashioned

2 1/2oz Bourbon
1/2oz Gingerbread Syrup
2 dashes Orange Bitters

Method: Stir all ingredients with ice and strain into an old fashioned glass. Garnish with an orange twist and a gingerbread biscuit.

Coffee And Vanilla Old Fashioned

60ml homemade Coffee-And-Vanilla-Infused Bourbon
15ml Vanilla Syrup
2 dashes El Guapo Mojo Cubano Bitters

Method: Build the ingredients in the glass and stir with ice. Garnish with a shard of expressed orange peel.

Honeycomb Rum Old Fashioned

2oz Appleton Estate Rare Blend 12-Year Jamaica Rum
1/2oz Honeycomb Syrup
2 dashes Chocolate Bitters

Method: Stir all ingredients with ice and strain over an ice ball.

Elder Goose

60ml Dry Gin
15ml Elderflower And Gooseberry Liqueur
2 dashes Grapefruit Bitters

Method: Stir all ingredients with ice in the glass and garnish with grapefruit peel.

Vanilla Rum Old Fashioned

2oz Bacardi Añejo Cuatro Rum
1/4oz Vanilla Syrup
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
2 dashes Orange Bitters

Method: Stir all ingredients in a mixing glass and then pour over a large ice cube in a low tumbler

Spiced Toffee Apple Old Fashioned

60ml Toffee-infused Vodka
15ml Jack Daniels Winter Jack (Apple Whiskey Punch Liqueur)
2 dashes Spiced Apple Bitters

Method: Stir all ingredients with a giant ice ball, which is vaguely reminiscent of an apple, and garnish with an apple slice studded with cloves, which is vaguely reminiscent of fireworks. What do you mean, you don’t see it?.

Smoky Banana Old Fashioned

60ml Bourbon
20ml Banana Liqueur
10ml Ten Year Old Ardbeg
1 dash Angostura bitters

Method: Stir all ingredients with ice in the glass and garnish with what is, in hindsight, a pathetically small slice of banana.

Gusanold Fashioned

60ml Tequila Blanco
15ml Agave Syrup
Absinthe
Peychaud’s Bitters

Rim the glass with Sal de Gusano, then rinse the inside with a splash of absinthe. Add the tequila and agave syrup over ice and stir, then float the bitters on top.
All done? Good. Now let’s get back to the rest of the week spent dancing the Lindy Hop and using a typewriter and listening to the wireless and writing a cheque and watching a DVD, etc.
