Movie cocktails: It Chapter Two (2019)

As It Chapter Two is released in cinemas today, I’m celebrating the return of a franchise that scared the crap out of me as a kid, last resulted in the highest grossing horror movie of all time, has put Stephen King back at the forefront of the horror genre again and is all based around the most terrifying clown imaginable (excepting certain real-life political figures #satire).

I was lucky enough to see the film at the start of the week, in IMAX no less, presumably to fit in Pennywise’s giant head, and felt inspired to create a drink in honour of a true horror icon.

My plan was to make a cocktail worthy of Pennywise, marrying a carnival flavour with a sense of the grotesque, hence the popcorn syrup and candy floss garnish (which soon dissolves and becomes part of the drink) and the maraschino syrup drizzled inside the glass to imitate Pennywise’s make-up. I used bourbon as a base as, in the sequel, the now-adult members of the Losers Club are seen drinking it several times.

So here you go. One sip and you’ll float too.

Dancing Clown

1.5oz Bourbon
1oz Lemon Juice
1/4oz Popcorn Syrup
1/2oz Maraschino Syrup (from the jar)
Candy Floss

Method: Shake the first three ingredients with ice and strain over crushed ice in a coupe glass. then spoon the maraschino syrup around the edge so that it creates streaks on the inside of the glass. Then garnish with candy floss (which will very quickly dissolve in the drink).
