Making a 'bold move' for the launch of Spice Hunter Rum

I put my house and family at risk by playing with fire next to alcohol all for the sake of this post.

Well, it was also to mark the launch of Spice Hunter Rum, which claims to be “the boldest spiced rum in the world”. It contains 13 exotic spices - apparently more than any other spiced rum available - including cinnamon, ginger, clove, nutmeg and pepper, which are then blended with premium Mauritian rum.

Surprisingly, given the bold claims, it actually makes for a really well-balanced taste. There’s a ton of flavour as you would expect, with the ginger coming through in particular (to my palate at least), but on the whole it makes for a really great sipper.

Still, the flavour is why we’re here and I was sent a bottle of this great new rum with a challenge to make a "#boldmove" with it. In the end, I decided against a tasting mid-parachute-jump and opted for a fire tiki drink, using no less than 4oz of Spice Hunter for added boldness.

When I think of ‘bold’ and fire, my tenuously-linking mind turns to Jimi Hendrix, his Axis: Bold As Love album and his guitar-lighting performance at Woodstock. So let’s call this a Just Ask The Axis.

Just Ask The Axis


4oz Spice Hunter Rum
2oz Lime Juice
2oz Pineapple Juice
1.5oz Honey Syrup
1/2oz Passionfruit Liqueur
1/2oz Maraschino Liqueur
For garnish: a scooped out lime half, some overproof rum and some cinnamon

Method: Shake the six ingredients together with ice and strain over crushed ice. Top up with more crushed ice. Pour the overproof rum into the lime half, place it on top and carefully - CAREFULLY - set it on fire. Sprinkle the cinnamon over the flame to get that cool sparking effect for Insta.
